I’ve been thinking about this for a while now. Why do I have such strong positive and negative feelings about Anne Hathaway when I think that she’s so talented? And with Howard Stern’s James Franco interview circling the web, I finally needed to express how torn I am when it comes to this unique individual.
Anne Hathaway. A talented actor, beautiful singer, elegant dancer, an elfish like beauty. Quite the triple threat. Yet, for some reason, we all hate her. (Obviously everyone doesn’t hate her. And hate is a strong word that is used for emphasis. If you’re offended by ‘hate’ please substitute ‘strong dislike’ as you read along). And even though we hate her, we love her movies. Devil Wears Prada…hello. And we all sobbed at Les Mis. And we all know she absolutely deserved her Oscar. But we still hate her. We still hate Ella Enchanted. What’s that all about? The hatred and love that is felt for her is like one of the great wonders of the world. A complete and utter mystery.
Is the reason that we hate her because she seems so clean that if you accidentally touched her skin, it would literally squeak? Is there really anything wrong with being clean?
Did she start her career with too many princess movies? Is that why? But that can’t be it, I saw them all several times.
Is it because she reminds us of the girl from Can’t Hardly Wait (CHW) who hosts the party, and the girl who wants us to sign her year book all at once? But, CHW is an amazing movie.
Is it because she seems like the captain of the social committee, condo board, valedictorian, and dance committee chair? And that she’d rat you out if you have a dog without advising the property managers? Are rules really all that bad? Really, if it wasn’t for committee members nothing would ever get done.
Is it because she just seems uncool and would not be fun at a party? And that she seems like she’d be super lame? And yet, we rather hang out with train-wreck-lohan who may at some point in the night punch us. Anne would never punch us.
Are the reasons we hate Anne Hathaway, the same reasons why some people hate me? You know who you are.
Do we hate her because we’re all just giant snobs?
Maybe it’s because they never should have asked her to host the Oscars. She’s not a comedian. Maybe there’s nothing wrong with Anne at all. Maybe it’s us. Maybe we can’t stand seeing a normal-ish woman who’s good at everything she does?
Maybe we hate her because she seems really positive. Maybe we hate her because she reminds us of our own annoying traits. Maybe it’s because she seems too normal and celebrities should have some sort of cool factor about themselves.
Maybe she’s actually a delightful person, who’s super fun. Maybe she’s not the tight-ass that she seems to be. Maybe she’s just a sweet nerd perfecting her uncoolness therefore making herself cool? Maybe it’s only OK for men to be nerds? (That’s a sad statement.)
I guess I didn’t answer the unsolved mystery of Anne Hathaway, but I’ll tell you this; it’s a strange feeling one experiences towards Anne Hathaway. There’s a guilt associated with it, because for some reason, you can’t stand her, even though she could be the best friend you never had.
