In 2006 Mark Zuckerberg and friends introduced the NewsFeed to the public. Many facebook users cried out with anger about their ‘privacy rights’ being violated. Their information they put out for the public to see, for the first time was truly public. New relationship statuses, new friends made, photos from last night, Jen is, Kelly is, Grant is…online. All of our information, was now advertised and promoted on everyone’s facebook for all of our friends to see. It was invasive, it was uncomfortable…it was wonderful.
For the first time, you were able to keep in touch with your friends and family, without actually keeping in touch. What’s that all about? You were able to tell your friends exactly what you were doing, exactly when you were doing it and they could do the same. Constant. Contact.
When I first became accustomed to the NewsFeed, the pictures we posted were much different than they are today. I was 25, in 2006, back in college and living with some girlfriends in my hometown. I had no responsibilities and all the freedom in the world.
Our 2007 pictures consisted of wild parties, get-togethers’, camping trips, first ‘friends’ weddings, and all around tomfoolery. We were wild. We were starting our lives, working in real jobs and getting real paycheques. We were careless. We were crazy. It was awesome.
The thing about being in your 20’s, is that one day you’ll blink and everything in your world has started to change. I started to first notice that my life was varying and my friends were maturing when I was 27/28. The pictures of all-night dance parties and team shirts were replaced with weddings, bridal showers, grown up dinner parties and engagements. My friends were becoming adults, right before my face(book).
As I continue to age and get closer and closer to my 30th birthday, even more has changed in the lives of the ones I care about. Photo albums, no longer titled ‘random drunk fest’ are called ‘babies first birthday’ ‘NEW HOUSE!!’ and ‘Yup, we got a pool’. Long over are the status updates about hangovers and being late for work. From now until the next phase our updates will be about babies, fevers, family vacations and anniversaries. The true facebook timeline.
