Over the holidays my family packed our bags and we headed to Victoria (Vancouver Island, BC – for those non-Canucks). The vacation was quite lovely, however, this is not the post where I will get into details of my trip (need to iron those posts out still).
This post is about my home city: Windsor.
One night while in Victoria, I went out with my cousins dancing and I met this girl who seemed significantly awkward. I decided I should introduce myself because we were with the same people. I knew that she was living in Windsor for school, so when I introduced myself, I told her that ‘I’m actually from Windsor‘. She then looked at me and said ‘I’m sorry‘. What’s that all about? What a B-word.
In truth, it was a totally offside comment that unfortunately happens a lot. It seems as though the entire country has an uneducated ‘hate’ on for the city with the best weather in the country. Yes Victoria, I’m stealing your claim to fame – Windsor’s weather is hands down the best.
- We get every season.
- Fall colours/weather last forever.
- Winter doesn’t suck too much (doesn’t get nearly as cold or pummeled with as much snow as most other parts of the country) & there’s a strong chance for a white Christmas.
- Spring comes earlier than any other part of the province.
- AND summer is insanely, tropically hot. It’s absolutely wonderful.
Now, I do realize the city obviously has its faults – we’re publicized at the Tijuana of the North and Sin City however, the city has much much more to offer than; cheap drinks, rub n’ tugs and strippers.
Firstly: you can afford to live there. Property is cheap and plentiful. If you have a family, it’s not only attainable that can you afford a house with a backyard, you can live within walking distance of a good school. Also, it’s safe and family oriented.
Secondly: The trees are tall and green, and there are TONS of parks.
Thirdly: If you want to feel like you’re in a big city, go to shows and do some big city shopping, Detroit is a 10 minute drive away. AND the Detroit city skyline from Windsor is probably one of my favourite views at night time!
Fourthly: The pizza is the best pizza in the country. Even our fast food pizzas are better. I recommend: Roma’s, Franco’s, Koolini’s, Riverside Tavern, Capri, Armando’s, Trevi – just to name a few.
Fifthly: You can drink for cheap any night of the week. AND Canadian Club originated from Windsor. Hiram Walkers house is pretty cool, and so is Paul Martin’s old house.
Sixthly (yes Sixthly): Our home hockey team is the Detroit Red Wings. FACT…They win Stanley Cup’s. It’s true – repeatedly they WIN! It’s nice supporting a team that can actually pull through in a crunch.
Unfortunately, I will probably never move back to my hometown. My career will dictate what cities I live in. But with all that being said, I’m proud that I grew up in Windsor. Good people come from Windsor (including good musicians!)
I’m sure there are other awesome bands that I missed but this is all I got right now. Anyway, that was my rant about my hometown pride. And to all the naysayers that think they know Windsor because they lived in the Student Ghetto, go out and explore. The city has amazing neighbourhoods, lots of history and tons of parks.
